MANCHESTER UNITED boss Ed Woodward has questioned the club signing Jadon Sancho to a £ 108m deal, insisting they must be “responsible” in the current climate.
Soccer clubs and sports in general have lost millions in the pandemic and fans were unable to attend.
Aside from the initial £ 35 million for Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek, the Old Trafford chief executive has been quiet in the transfer market.
Woodward hasn’t ruled out hiring 20-year-old England and Borussia Dortmund star Sancho, but it could be done at an initial £ 70 million fee with a staggering £ 40 million in add-ons tied to a series of clauses. .
The executive director told United Review, the club’s game day program: “The disruption of the pandemic continues to create enormous economic pressures from the top to the bottom of the football pyramid and while we are fortunate to be in a position tougher than most clubs, we are not immune to impact.
“Despite this, we are delighted to have brought in Donny van de Beek from Ajax, adding more quality to a midfield already bolstered by the signing of Bruno Fernandes in January.
“Both Donny and Bruno are players we have been following for some time and their signings reflect our long-term focus on combining high-quality recruits with local talent to develop a team capable of winning trophies by playing attacking and entertaining football.” .
But Woodward admitted he was excited about the youth pool that boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has widened over the past year.
United has awarded everyone lucrative new contracts.
He said: “As part of that process, we have also awarded new contracts to Nemanja Matic and academy graduates Dean Henderson, Brandon Williams, Scott McTominay and Mason Greenwood over the past year.
“We have also continued to strengthen our thriving academy by attracting a number of promising young players from across Europe, including Marc Jurado from Barcelona and Álvaro Fernández Carreras from Real Madrid.
Together, these investments reinforce our optimism about the future and we will continue to build on this strong foundation.
“However, we must also be responsible in the use of resources during the most extraordinarily challenging time for everyone in football.”
United kick off their Prem season with a home game against Crystal Palace tonight.
