Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford has urged the club to use the recent success of Liverpool and Manchester City as “motivation” for the upcoming season.

Liverpool lifted their first league title in 30 years last season, while City won back-to-back titles in the previous two seasons and clinched a national treble in 2018-19.

“I think that’s natural for anyone who plays for the club or anyone who is from Manchester,” Rashford told the PA News Agency. “We have to use all of that as motivation to keep improving as a team.

“But we cannot lose sight of what is important, and that is the development of our own team and keep improving.

“You may find yourself looking too far away sometimes, but we play the best we can and improve the most when we focus on ourselves as individuals and as a team.

“The coach always wants us to do that and that’s the best way to do it.”

United failed to win a trophy for the third season in a row, but secured a place in the Champions League with a top-three finish after a 14-game unbeaten streak in the Premier League.

Rashford finished as the club’s second top scorer last season with 22 goals, but said he wants him and the team to perform on a regular basis.

“Obviously it is a big step,” he added. “The guys worked hard and for me, it’s what we deserved as a team. We’ve had tough times this season and we’ve been unstoppable at times.”

“But we have to find that consistency, that’s the most important thing for us. We have a fairly young team, so if we can find that consistency, that will be important for us.”

“I missed four or five months and in my mind, I could have done a lot more this season … but for whatever reason, it didn’t happen.

“I never lose touch with reality and I know that next season I have to come back better than last.”
