Man United heads towards ‘great moment’ ahead of hectic schedule

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United are headed for a “great time” and that the hectic Christmas schedule could determine if they can mount a title challenge this season.

United are five points off the top with a game in hand after the weekend’s results and Solskjaer believes that six games in 17 days, starting with Thursday’s trip to Sheffield United, will determine whether a first title since 2013 is realistic.

“I think at Christmas, with the amount of games in a short space of time, there will be position changes,” Solskjaer said. “We have one less game but it’s a great time in the season, this time around Christmas, then the new year comes, then you have a break with the FA Cup, maybe then we will have a clearer vision of how it will look to us.

“Now we are watching the Sheff United and Leeds United games.”

Solskjaer called Manchester City’s 0-0 draw his team’s “best performance” in the derby since taking over as manager despite taking just two shots on target at Old Trafford on Saturday.

United’s approach drew some criticism, but Solskjaer has defended his offensive outing, particularly in home games against the Big Six, in which he has only managed one goal against Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal and City.

“If you compare our goal count from last season to now, we are way ahead with the number of games we have played and the number of goals we have scored, whether at home or away, it doesn’t really matter,” Solskjaer said. .

“I think the teams and the bigger teams prepared to defend themselves against us and be happy with a draw.

“That is of course a challenge for us, but I think we have shown in many games that we create opportunities. I think we have scored and created a lot of opportunities at certain times and it is more varied in the way we score.”
