BUTTERWORTH: A businessman claimed a trial in Magistrates Court here on Wednesday (October 28) on six criminal charges, including robbery and impersonating a police officer.

Mohamad Azrullah Mohd Rodzi, 33, pleaded not guilty to Magistrate M. Kalaiarasi after the court interpreter read the charges against him.

Bukit Mertajam’s Azrullah appeared confused during the process, but contested all charges.

According to the first charge, he tried to rob Tang Chye Hong, 49, a phone salesman in a store in 2377, Jalan Permatang Manggis, Tasek Gelugor here around 10 pm on October 24.

The charge, framed in Section 393 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and a fine upon conviction.

The defendant was also charged with impersonating a policeman with the intention of stealing a police minivan at the same place and time.

On the fifth count, he was charged with stealing two phones from Nurul Atieka Mazlan, 21, on October 24 at approximately 10 am at Kedai Vivo in Pokok Sena, Tasek Gelugor.

This charge, under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, carries a prison sentence of seven years or a fine, or flogging or all when convicted.

He was also charged with impersonating a police officer with the intention of stealing Nurul’s phones.

Kalaiarasi granted the defendant bail of RM17,500 with three bonds and set November 27 for the mention and delivery of documents.
