KUALA LUMPUR: Four people were arrested yesterday at a checkpoint in Petaling Jaya on suspicion of being involved in blackmailing an employee of a private company who obtained a loan from an Ah Long (usurer).

Petaling Jaya District Police Chief, ACP, Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal, said the suspects, aged 26 to 28, were detained as a result of a complaint filed by the victim who believed he had successfully paid off his loan to the Ah Long 10 years ago.

Nik Ezanee said that the 31-year-old male victim had reportedly taken out a personal loan of RM 500 from a private company believed to be licensed in 2012.

“The victim who was asked to make a reimbursement of RM 1,150 per month for one year also requested that her ATM card held by the company be canceled because she believed that she had successfully paid off the loan in 2013.” Nik Ezanee said in a statement today.

He said the victim later made a personal loan in 2016 on a social site thinking it was a cooperative.

He said the victim was contacted by a marketer and a friend who took him to the same company that he had borrowed from 10 years ago.

“Officers said that the victim still had loan arrears of RM8,000 to be settled. The victim was then threatened to return the balance within a stipulated period.

“The police verified previous records and found that one of the four suspects was wanted in connection with a previous Ah Long case,” he said.

According to him, after that, one of the suspects was detained for four days from today, while another suspect was detained under Section 5 (2) of the Lenders Act 1951. -Called
