Man caught who hit homeless person in wheelchair

GEORGE TOWN: Police today arrested a man who had attempted to rob a homeless man in a wheelchair over the weekend, leaving the man, an elderly man, with bruises on his face.

In the 9:30 am incident on Saturday, the attacker approached the 66-year-old man who was chatting with a friend on the sidewalk of China Street and then struck up a conversation with him.

Moments later, the man grabbed the old man’s briefcase that contained his valuables. A brief fight ensued in which the young man struck the old man’s face.

When the major refused to put down her bag, the assailant gave up and left with an accomplice who was waiting for him on a motorcycle nearby. The entire incident was caught on camera.

Northeast District Police Chief Soffian Santong said a 32-year-old man was later captured on Stewart Lane, not far away. He said the man had nine previous convictions.

He said the suspect was admitted to Penang Hospital because he suffered from tuberculosis and internal bleeding in the stomach. He said police were in the middle of locating his accomplice.

The case will be investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing harm by committing a robbery, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and / or lashing.
