KUALA LUMPUR: A 52-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly tweeting a seditious statement insulting the royal institution, says Bukit Aman CID director.

Comm Datuk Huzir Mohamed (Photo) said the suspect was arrested in Cheras on Monday (October 26).

“The suspect had allegedly posted on Twitter questioning a video that had been uploaded to the National Security Council (NSC) website about ‘Wasiat Raja-Raja Melayu (the will of the Malaysian rulers).’

“He was detained on October 26 in Cheras and the device used to publish the statement has been seized,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (October 27).

The suspect is expected to be detained, he added.

“We are investigating the matter under Section 4 (1) of the Sedition Act for causing conflicts and insults to any ruler or government and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act of 1998 for improper use of network facilities” Comm Huzir said.

Bukit Aman CID’s Special Investigation Unit is also investigating three other similar cases of statements that allegedly insulted Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdulllah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah on social media platforms, it added.

“The alleged insults were posted on Facebook and Twitter,” he said.

In the first case, Comm Huzir said the police began investigating a statement posted by a Facebook user that said: “Now in Bangkok, they are saying no to the King.”

“We began investigating on October 21. We are still tracking the suspect and we are in the middle of recording witness statements relevant to the case.

The second case involves another Facebook user who allegedly insulted the King, with an investigation launched on October 26.

Another similar investigation was also launched on October 25 into a Twitter user for making statements that allegedly insulted the King, Comm Huzir said.

“We are also in the middle of locating the suspect and calling witnesses to record their statements,” he said.

Strict action will be taken against the suspects for making seditious statements, he added, urging them to surrender to the Special Investigation Unit as soon as possible.
