PETALING JAYA: A 24-year-old man was detained during a police raid on a house here in connection with the sedition investigation involving University Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany).

Datuk Fadzil Ahmat, head of the Selangor Criminal Investigation Department, said the man was arrested for obstructing police personnel in the performance of their duties.

“A CID team from Kajang Police Headquarters raided a house in Jalan 17/48, Petaling Jaya at around 3.30 pm on Saturday (November 7) in connection with the case.

“During the raid, the man had obstructed the police investigation by recording the raid via Facebook Live,” he said when contacted on Saturday.

The man ignored a police warning not to record, he added.

He was then detained, while his mobile phone was also seized.

“His crime is typified in Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing public officials in the performance of their functions,” said SAC Fadzil.

The man was then taken to Petaling Jaya Police Headquarters for further action, it added.

Earlier it was reported that statements by Umany were recorded, after two of his bosses were summoned to the police.

Umany President Yap Wen Qing and Vice President Tan Li Yuan entered the Kajang Police District Headquarters around 2 p.m. and left at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday (November 5).

His lawyer, Rajsurian Pillai, had said that his clients were being investigated under the Sedition Law and the Communications and Multimedia Law for a Facebook post titled “Yang di-Pertuan Agong should not intervene in national affairs.”

“My two clients will cooperate fully. So far, we have been informed that there have been 42 reports across the country on the post.

“The police did not deny that additional statements could be taken in the future and that other members of Umany are called up. But for now, they haven’t said if they need to go back, ”he said.
