KUALA LUMPUR: A local man who allegedly carried out extortion activities and launched death threats against several people in Petaling Jaya was arrested by police in Langkawi yesterday afternoon.
Petaling Jaya District Police Chief Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said the 29-year-old was arrested in Jalan Pantai Cenang, Langkawi, around 2 pm yesterday.
“A total of 35 complaints, involving the same type of extortion, were filed by different victims in Damansara, Kota Damansara and Sungai Way from the beginning of this month until Wednesday,” he said in a statement today.
He said that in the latest report, a woman claimed to have received a threatening text message (SMS) asking her to deposit 10,000 ringgit in a local account and that she would be killed otherwise. The same threat was also received by other victims.
Police also confiscated four mobile phones and an ATM card from the man when he was arrested, Nik Ezanee said, adding that the man had said his phone had been hacked.
However, he was found to have a gambling-related criminal record.
The man has been placed in preventive detention for three days from today until Tuesday.
