JOHOR BARU: A 35-year-old man is feared to have drowned after jumping into the Johor Strait while fishing near Kampung Tanjung Langsat, Pasir Putih here on Tuesday (December 15).

Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani, Deputy Deputy Minister of Seri Alam, OCPD, said the victim and her friend went to a fishing raft in a wooden boat around 12 p.m.

“When strong winds and currents hit, they both decided to get on the fishing raft and tied their wooden boat to the platform.

“The victim then noticed that the rope detached from the platform and jumped into the water to prevent the boat from moving away,” he said in a statement.

However, the victim’s attempt was in vain and his friend saw him struggling to stay afloat, he added.

The friend rushed to ask others on the platform for help, but when he returned to the scene, the victim was not in sight.

Meanwhile, Pasir Gudang Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Ibrahim Omar identified the victim as Fazudin Azuardi Ismadi.

He said his team was working with police and marine authorities to conduct a surface search within a radius of 1 km from where the victim was last seen.
