Mall: only one infected, no 44

KUALA LUMPUR: Only one security guard working for 1 Utama shopping center in Petaling Jaya was found to have contracted Covid-19, not 44 as reported.

A spokesperson for 1 Utama refuted Petaling District Disaster Management Committee Chairman Johary Anuar’s report that 44 security guards at the mall were infected by Covid-19.

According to the spokesman, the only security guard was removed from the mall as soon as the Health Ministry notified the case last week.

“They took out the security guard and we reported the situation to the security company he came from.

“The security company went through testing and found that there were 44 security guards from their company that tested positive for Covid-19.

“We would like to state that the 44 Covid-19 positive security guard cases mentioned by the Petaling district office did not originate from 1 Utama; and it was not part of the 6,000 massive tests we conducted, ”the spokesperson said.

“In fact, they are guards outsourced from an external service provider where Covid-19 was contracted through a bedroom and not within our facilities.”

Of the 6,000 people who were screened, 20 tenants and one mall staff were identified as Covid-19-positive, the spokesperson added.

“These 21 people have been quickly quarantined by the Ministry of Health to contain the spread and further minimize possible exposure,” the spokesman said.

When asked to comment on 1 Utama’s rebuttal, Johary said that he took note of 1 Utama’s comments but would refrain from commenting.

In Putrajaya, Utama’s group has a total of 132 people who tested positive for Covid-19, said Tan Sri Health Director-General Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah.

“On October 15, a total of 105 new cases were identified in the group, bringing the total number of cases to 132, where 131 cases were reported in Selangor while one case was reported in Melaka,” he said yesterday in your daily press conference.

He added that the cases involved 107 non-citizens and 25 Malaysians.

The conglomerate’s index case (case number 15,023), he added, is a 28-year-old Nepalese citizen who is a security guard at a shopping center in the Petaling district, he added.

“The case tested positive for Covid-19 on October 8 through a close contact examination and had been admitted to Sungai Buloh Hospital for further treatment.

“Previously, the Ministry of Health suspected that case number 12,549 was the index case, but further investigation found that symptoms started much later compared to case number 15,023,” explained Dr. Noor Hisham.
