PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s healthcare system is one of the best in the world and has the ability to deal with any Covid-19 spike, says Prime Minister’s Department (Special Functions) Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Yusof.

The minister’s guarantee comes after a third wave of Covid-19 infections that is spreading through Sabah and other states in the country with an average of more than 700 patients since last month.

“The data has shown that our country has one of the best health systems in the world and is capable of handling any spike and reducing the transmission rate. But the public must play their part by adhering to the new norm to break the chain, ”Mohd Redzuan told the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

“We are having daily discussions to assess the performance of leaders and how to improve our approach to the pandemic to alleviate public concern.”

Last year, Malaysia was ranked first as the best in the world for healthcare by the Annual Global Retirement Index 2019 ahead of France, Thailand, Ecuador, Mexico and Costa Rica.

Malaysia was also touted as one of the best countries to control the spread of Covid-19 in June, before a surge in Sabah last month resulted in high triple-digit cases almost daily.

Mohd Redzuan added that mass Covid-19 detection is not necessary for all Malaysians.

“As of now, the detection of Covid-19 is only done in people showing symptoms and not in all, because as long as there is no vaccine, anyone can become infected with the virus at any time.”

When asked by Datuk Jalaludin Alias (PN-Jelebu) if elections can be held during the pandemic, Mohd Redzuan said it is a decision for the Election Commission to make.
