PETALING JAYA: The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Khairy Jamaluddin, has ensured that the Malays will not be used as laboratory rats for the Covid-19 vaccines that are expected to arrive in the first quarter of next year.

“We will not endanger the health and safety of our citizens,” he said in Parliament today.

This was in response to Azis Jamman (Warisan-Sepanggar), who asked the government to commit not to use Malaysians for its “test run” of the vaccines.

The minister also said that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin would make an announcement in the near future about the first batch of vaccines.

About 70% of the first cohort will be vaccinated once we receive a batch of vaccines from various suppliers, ideally during the first quarter of next year. “

He said that priority will be given to adults in the early stages of vaccine distribution, with particular attention to those at the forefront. “We are prioritizing adults to increase the immunity of our population.”

Asked by Ahmad Maslan (BN-Pontian) about what would happen to the remaining 30%, the minister said: “With this 70% target in mind, there will be those who will not receive the vaccine.

“For example, children under the age of 12 will still not be considered for vaccination.”

The World Health Organization was previously reported to have said that 10 of the 47 vaccines in clinical trials since Nov. 3 had reached phase three, but had not yet been approved for widespread use.
