PETALING JAYA: Nearly half of Malaysians surveyed in a poll said they expect former Vice President Joe Biden to win the November 3 US presidential election compared to just 12% favoring incumbent Donald Trump.
That’s the finding of a survey by global market research company Ipsos involving 17,507 respondents from 24 countries, including Malaysia, that has been conducted since last month.
“Half of Malaysians trust that Joe Biden will be elected as the next president of the United States.
“One in eight believes that Trump will be re-elected,” Ipsos Malaysia said in a statement.
Overall, 39% of respondents from the 24 countries felt that Biden would win, compared to 27% for Trump.
Malaysia tied with Chile and South Africa for third place among the countries that backed a Biden victory.
Mexico ranked first with 51% saying they felt Biden would win, followed by South Korea (50%).
The countries whose respondents were most certain of a Trump victory were Poland (41%), Russia (36%), India (36%), Hungary (35%) and Turkey (35%).
The poll also asked respondents who they would vote for in the US presidential election, if they could.
About 47% of Malaysian respondents said they would vote for Biden, compared to just 8% for Trump.
Another question posed in the survey was about what respondents considered serious risks for this year’s US presidential election.
“Malaysians believe that spreading fake news, electoral fraud and vote buying are serious risks to the US elections,” Ipsos said.
