PETALING JAYA: Malaysians are not very happy with the news of an additional 20 sen charge on online purchases over RM200.

Many expressed disappointment at the proposal, which was announced by Vice Minister Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin in Bachok, Kelantan, aimed at raising funds to help the B40 group and improve rural communications infrastructure.

Some don’t mind paying, but ask if the money will actually be used for its intended purpose.

“I am not opposed to this, but will he really go to group B40?” asked a Facebook user.

Another said the government should fix the existing leaks first before asking people for more money.

Others also suggested that government leaders contribute to the cause rather than relying on the rakyat.

One of them said that there was nothing wrong with the intended purpose of the surcharge, but that they could have thought of other alternatives before imposing a fee on people for online purchases.

“(Helping) group B40 is not bad. The downside of this is that it seems that the person who suggested this idea ran out of options before transferring the problem to people, ”said the person.

Some people also felt that the proposal would put a burden on people, who already pay an additional 1% on their electricity bill to support the development of renewable energy in Malaysia.
