PETALING JAYA: Eastvale, a California city near Los Angeles, now has a Malay-Vietnamese mayor who once lived in Kedah for a decade.
Jocelyn Yow, 25, is of Malay and Vietnamese descent.
“I am honored to be the daughter of my parents and proud to be a Malay-Vietnamese Chinese-American,” she once said on Instagram.
He had studied at SMJK Keat Hwa in Alor Setar, Kedah.
The swearing-in announcement last Wednesday noted that she is the “youngest woman of color to serve as mayor of a city in Calfornia.”
Eastvale has about 55,602 residents in Riverside County.
Yow, who has a six-month-old son, said his father had ventured to the United States in the 1980s for further study.
“In 1996, we had to move to Malaysia when my paternal grandfather was diagnosed with cancer, and I ended up spending more than 10 years there, which allowed me to learn more about our family history, heritage and culture,” she said on Instagram. post in May.

He reportedly studied at the University of California, Berkeley, and is now pursuing a master’s degree in government at Harvard Extension School.
In her one-year appointment, Yow noted that she was one of the few young mothers serving as mayor in California.
“I am hopeful that more young women and mothers will follow suit,” she added.
Being a new mother, she said, had further fueled her passion for serving the community.
In 2018, Yow was elected to the Eastvale city council.
Previously, he was a district representative in the California Senate and an assistant to the United States House of Representatives.
