PETALING JAYA: Five horses in Terengganu tested positive for African horse sickness (AHS), the first case of its kind reported in the country.

According to The Horse, a website for horse owners and managers, the World Organization for Animal Health in France reported on the outbreak.

This occurs as Thailand’s equine industry recovers from its African horse sickness outbreak with thousands of vaccinated horses.

In the case of the horses in Terengganu, four horses had shown signs of the disease, including fever and breathing difficulties, by mid-August.

The owner reported the symptoms to the Department of Veterinary Services, the website said.

Blood samples taken and sent to the Veterinary Research Institute in Ipoh, Perak, confirmed that all four horses had African horse sickness.

A second sample was taken on Aug. 31 and all five horses tested positive and will be euthanized, he said.

Investigations are underway to determine the source of infection.
