Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pix), speaking at today’s 23rd ASEAN-China Summit, said Malaysia believes that vaccine research and development remains Malaysia’s top priority.

“We therefore appreciate China’s contribution and support to ASEAN initiatives for public health emergencies.

“We look forward to the speedy completion of clinical trials for the vaccine and we appreciate President Xi Jinping’s commitment to making the vaccine a ‘global public good,'” he said.

The 23rd ASEAN-China Summit was held as part of the 37th ASEAN Summit, hosted by Vietnam via video conference due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

During his 10-minute speech, Muhyiddin pointed out that, although Covid-19 has been a public health crisis, it has also had precedents in its alteration of the modern way of life of societies, damaging economies and tearing the social fabric of societies. ASEAN communities.

“Therefore, recovery efforts require that we address economic and social issues.

“In this regard, ASEAN and China should continue to carry out regular discussions and cooperation at multiple levels, while at the same time exploring new opportunities for practical cooperation, in our fight for a comprehensive recovery,” he urged.

The prime minister leads the Malaysian delegation to the biannual summit practically from here (Kuala Lumpur) that runs until Sunday.

The summit is chaired by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc in his capacity as President of ASEAN 2020, under the theme “ASEAN Cohesive and Responsive”.

Also part of the Malaysian delegation are the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, as well as the Chief Minister and Minister of Industry and International Trade, Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.
