SINGAPORE: A Malaysian was one of 16 foreigners who were repatriated from Singapore as part of a heightened security posture following a series of terrorist attacks in France and around the world.
The Malaysian was found to be radicalized and wanted to travel to Syria or Palestine to engage in gun violence, the republic’s Interior Ministry (MHA) said in a statement here today.
The other 15 were Bangladeshis, most of whom worked in the construction industry and, in response to recent terrorist attacks in France, had made social media posts inciting violence or stoking communal unrest, according to the ministry. .
“In view of the deteriorating security situation, the local team has been on heightened alert since the beginning of September and has also stepped up its security activities to prevent copycat attacks in Singapore,” MHA said.
He said a total of 37 people were investigated by the Department of Homeland Security, adding that of the total, 14 were Singaporean and 23 were foreigners.
“Investigations into the remaining seven foreigners are still ongoing,” he said.
