Malaysia passes the 100,000 mark with 1,581 new cases

PETALING JAYA: The number of Covid-19 infections in the country has surpassed the 100,000 mark after the Ministry of Health reported 1,581 cases today.

In a statement, Chief Health Officer Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said the total number of infections now stands at 100,318.

This makes Malaysia one of 75 countries that have recorded more than 100,000 cases since the start of the pandemic.

Noor Hisham said there were 1,085 recoveries, bringing the total number of discharges to 81,099.

There are 18,773 active cases with 102 patients being treated in intensive care and 45 requiring respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, two deaths were recorded, bringing the death toll to 446.

The deaths were both in Sabah; one 15 years old and the other 61. The latter had a history of illness.

Selangor continued to record the highest number of cases today with 491 infections, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 379 and Sabah with 249.

Negeri Sembilan reported 144 new cases, Johor had 115 and Melaka 76.

Penang had 37 cases, followed by Perak and Labuan with 26 each, Pahang with 12 and Kelantan with nine. Terengganu had seven, Kedah and Putrajaya had four each, while Sarawak had two.

A total of 270 cases were currently related to the immigration depot and jail groups, and the Jalan Harapan prison group recorded the majority of cases with 185.
