PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is expected to enter the third wave of Covid-19 in line with the increasing number of cases registered around the world recently, said Director General of Health, Tan Sri, Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah (pix).

“Now we see that it is in the initial stage of the third wave; so the cases detected were not only in our country but in other countries we are also seeing an increase, “he said yesterday at a press conference on Covid-19 updates here.

When asked about the Health Ministry’s projections on Covid-19, he said it depended on the actions of the ministry and various other agencies such as the police, the Immigration Department, the military and all Malaysians.

“Together we can take our own actions, that is, following the SOP, while the ministry will implement public health interventions, the police carry out barricades and the army intensify controls at the borders, rat tracks and the like.

“The ministry will also take measures to protect certain places such as nursing homes, immigration detention warehouses, jails and other detention centers,” he added.

Dr. Noor Hisham said the ministry was now better prepared to deal with the pandemic than when it first struck, in terms of mobilization of personnel and number of personal protective equipment (PPE) and ventilators.

“The ministry has carried out the mobilization of health support teams; Before September 27, we had sent health ministry personnel to certain districts (Tawau, Lahad Datu and Semporna) in Sabah.

“We will assess the need and send more experts if necessary,” he added.

When asked about the Tembok Cluster in Kedah, he said it was under control because the infections were in a confined space, the prison.

“It is not in the community and this Tembok Group is like the group in the Immigrant Detention Center in Bukit Jalil,” he said.

The Tembok Group recorded 128 cases yesterday, bringing its cumulative total to 220, as Malaysia recorded 287 new cases, the highest daily number since the pandemic hit the country in January.Called
