PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Bar Association has asked the Attorney General’s Office (AGC) to provide detailed reasons for the “new developments” in the corruption trial of former Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali granted an exoneration that did not amount to an acquittal after the prosecution told the court that they did not want to go ahead with the case due to some “new developments”, on the day the trial was supposed to resume. of the minister.

Malaysian Bar Association President Salim Bashir said the request raises questions about the investigations at this stage, just before the resumption of the trial was scheduled.

“It is also very concerning that no time frame has been provided to further investigate this ‘new development.’

“We believe that the Prosecutor, in exercising his constitutional powers and discretion to suspend a prosecution in such a high-profile case, must provide valid, rational and compelling reasons for his decision,” he said in a statement. .

Salim emphasized that the public has the right to know the detailed explanation about the discharge which does not amount to acquittal in relation to the RM 1 million corruption case of Tengku Adnan.

The money was allegedly deposited in Tengku Adnan’s CIMB Bank account as an incentive to assist in Nucleus Properties Sdn Bhd’s request to increase the proportion of industrial parcels of land in Jalan Semarak.

The crime is said to have taken place at the Putra World Trade Center CIMB branch on December 27, 2013.

If convicted, Tengku Adnan faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of five times the amount he allegedly received.
