PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Airports Aeropolis and Alibaba Group have announced the launch of their joint venture, Cainiao Aeropolis eWTP Hub, Malaysia, in the hope that it can reinforce KLIA’s position as a leading regional cargo hub.
Operated by Alibaba’s logistics unit, Cainiao Smart Logistics Network, the new project is expected to help facilitate delivery in less than 24 hours within Malaysia, with the goal of eventually achieving a 72-hour delivery worldwide.
In a joint statement, the groups said Lazada, Southeast Asia’s largest e-commerce company, will be the first to use the fulfillment center and that more are expected to follow.
Mohd Shukrie Salleh, CEO of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, said he expects the new facility to double KLIA’s current annual cargo volume to 1.4 million tonnes by 2029, adding that they are targeting various markets, including industry. automotive, fashion, electronics and healthcare. , among others.
“With the growth in cargo volume, we are looking for better airline connectivity through KLIA with new routes and an increase in flight frequency, belly space utilization and cargo capacity.
“There is the potential to achieve GDP (gross domestic product) growth of at least $ 10.1 billion and create more than 100,000 jobs by the center’s 10th year of operations,” he said.
Eric Xu, General Manager of Cainiao Smart Hub, said: “As one of Cainiao’s key regional hubs, Cainiao Aeropolis eWTP Hub, Malaysia, will play a strategic infrastructure role to facilitate cross-border trade for SMEs (small and medium-sized businesses). and improve the overall consumer experience for imports and exports. “
He added that with the rise of the digital economy, smart logistics will continue to play a critical role in helping SMEs access a broader global market and improve their market competitiveness.
The main functions of the center will include the operation, storage and classification of the cargo terminal. The facility will also feature a dedicated customs inspection point to improve security and efficiency without reducing handling time.
Cainiao Aeropolis eWTP Hub, Malaysia, is one of the major projects developed under the electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP) partnership between the Malaysian government and the Alibaba Group in 2017.
