PPBM Information Chairman Radzi Jidin says Muhyiddin Yassin took over as party chairman according to the party’s constitution following the firing of Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.
PETALING JAYA: Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, as PPBM president, agreed with the party’s decision to leave Pakatan Harapan, but changed his position at the last moment, chief information officer Radzi Jidin said today.
He said Mahathir announced and supported the decision to leave the ruling coalition, formed after the 2018 general election, and form a new coalition with other parties.
Radzi dismissed a claim by Marzuki Yahya, who was appointed by Mahathir as PPBM general secretary, that the decision to leave the coalition was never disputed. Radzi said, in fact, the issue was discussed for months.
“It was only at the last moment, when the plan was to take place, that Mahathir took another position at the party,” he said in a statement today. “The claim that the Supreme Council has never decided to leave PH is completely false and is not supported by facts.”

Radzi said the party’s Supreme Council agreed to give Mahathir some time before announcing the decision at a February 23 meeting.
The following day, Mahathir resigned as Prime Minister and as Party Chairman; Party President Muhyiddin Yassin took over as interim president and announced PPBM’s departure from PH.
He also contested Mahathir’s position as PPBM president, and argued that Muhyiddin still held that position until a new president is chosen in the upcoming elections, according to the party’s constitution.
“At this time, another date has been set for the PPBM elections,” he added of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Radzi said the Supreme Council does not have the power under the party constitution to reject Mahathir’s firing.
He said that all party leaders and members are bound by the constitution, and that no one had absolute power in the party.
He demanded that PPBM members maintain party unity and support Muhyiddin, who is prime minister, “to lift Malaysia out of the Covid-19 crisis and restore economic growth.”
Radzi also argued that Hamzah Zainuddin is the party’s current secretary general, and not Marzuki, after the latter issued a statement using that designation. Marzuki released a statement as party secretary general, claiming that PPBM had not made an official decision to leave the PH coalition during the Supreme Court meeting on February 23.
Marzuki was kicked out for the party in March, and Hamzah was named in his place a week later.
