Christian Eriksen returned to Wembley to pursue England when Denmark achieved a 1-0 victory in the UEFA Nations League.

The game started on a nervous note for England when Harry Maguire received a yellow card for a challenge to Yussuf Poulsen. It could have been a red card itself, but it mattered little, as the Manchester United defender didn’t last half as long.

Maguire received his marching orders when he received a second yellow card just after half an hour. He followed a sliding challenge after an awkward first touch and brought down Kasper Dolberg.

Things took a turn for the worse for England moments later when they gave up a penalty after Kyle Walker made contact with Thomas Delaney.

Christian Eriksen got close to the point and took his penalty down the middle to give Denmark the lead. It closed out a memorable day for the former Tottenham star, who was making his 100th international game at a field that he temporarily called home.

Schmeichel denies England in the second half

England came close to equalizing in the second half when Kasper Schmeichel cleared a Mason Mount header from close range.

Schmeichel also overturned a free kick by another Chelsea player, Reece James, before England claimed a penalty from the resulting corner kick. The referee rejected the appeals.

In the end, there was no way out for Gareth Southgate’s team, who had the same number of shots on goal as Denmark.

James also received a red card after the final whistle for dissenting.

The result means the Danes overtake England in their Nations League group on goal difference. Belgium currently leads the group with nine points, two ahead of their closest rivals.

It is also the first time England have lost at home since September 2018.
