Harry Maguire claims that Manchester United’s size and past glories mean that it draws more criticism than any other club in the world.
The knives have come out again for United and the boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the last week.
Last Sunday they suffered a 1-0 home loss to Arsenal. And a regrettable 2-1 Champions League loss to Istanbul Basaksehir he made two losses in four days.
They entered Saturday’s game against Everton facing an unwanted record. Another loss would have doomed them to their worst start to the league season since 1989-90.
It didn’t look good when Bernard gave Everton the lead in 20 minutes. But a quick double from Bruno Fernandes sent United into halftime ahead. And Edinson Cavani got a 3-1 win with his first goal for the club in added time.
United are still in the bottom half, but Maguire believes that much of the criticism is due to United’s past glories.
He said: “In this club, one thing that I have noticed in my time here, I have been here a year and a half, is that we are the most talked about club in the world.
“Why? Because we are the biggest club in the world. People don’t want us to do well. Why? Probably because of the success we’ve had in the past.
“We have to live up to that, we have to react and not let the negatives enter our bubble on the training ground. Sometimes it’s hard for guys. “
Maguire says United are back to normal
Maguire responded to United’s victory at Goodison with further comment on him. club Twitter feed.
The defender said: “We reacted well to two bad results. We felt we were on the right track after Leipzig (5-0 win) and disappoint us against Arsenal.
“It wasn’t a good enough performance. On the week we again gave them a soft goal and it was too difficult for us to create opportunities to come back.
“We knew this was an important match to score three points. We reacted well, but it is only the beginning ”.
Maguire has also received much criticism after his move of £ 85 million from Leicester in the summer of 2019. That was a world record rate for a defender.
But his boss, Solskjaer, praised him after the victory in Everton.
The United manager said: “I thought Harry’s performance was superior against, for me, one of the best in the world in passing game, (Dominic) Calvert-Lewin, with his timing in the air, his jump, his jump and his athletics. ” .
“And I thought that we, as a baseline, defended ourselves very well against him. Very happy with Harry and the rest of them. “
