PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) raided four offices in an investigation into millions of unpaid royalties by recording artists.

Sources said that an operation on Wednesday (November 25) saw MACC visiting the offices of Public Performance Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PPM), Recording Performers Malaysia Berhad (RPM), Music Authors Copyright Protection Berhad (MACP) and Performers’ Rights and Interest Society of Malaysia Berhad (PRISM).

“The MACC has taken several related documents for further study and investigation. Certain people will also be called in to facilitate the investigations,” the source said.

MACC Deputy Commissioner Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya has confirmed that the anti-corruption body is investigating this matter.

However, he said it was too early to comment on the investigation.

“In fairness, all sectors involved should refrain from sensationalizing this issue and allow sufficient time for the MACC to investigate this matter in a transparent and professional manner,” said Ahmad Khusairi.

The investigation is conducted under Section 18 of the MACC Act of 2009, which covers false claims.

The issue was first raised by the Malaysian Artists Association (Karyawan) in early October, which claimed that millions of ringgit collected as royalties over the past two decades have not been distributed to singers and musicians.
