Azam Baki says that MACC is not perfect, but it is doing its best to solve all the problems raised.

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is monitored by five independent panels to ensure it is transparent and free from third-party interference, said its chief commissioner, Azam Baki.

He said they comprise the advisory panel, the operational evaluation panel, the prevention and inspection panel, the complaints committee and the Special Committee on Corruption.

In an interview with Bernama, Azam said that the advisory panel deals with policies and procedures, and that the operational evaluation panel monitors cases and gives opinions on whether a case should be closed or reevaluated.

The prevention and inspection panel provides advice on corruption prevention and educational activities, the complaints committee monitors misconduct by MACC officials, and the Special Committee on Corruption reviews MACC’s annual performance and presents it to the first Minister.

Azam said independent panels, whose members are not government officials, could be classified as representatives of the people or as guardians against any misappropriation by MACC.

He said the public wanted MACC to serve efficiently, professionally and fairly in handling cases of corruption and abuse of power.

“I am not saying that we are perfect in the performance of our work, but we are doing everything possible to solve any problem raised by people, such as in the case of river pollution and land invasion,” he added.
