KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) launched an investigation into several contracts that were allegedly awarded after direct negotiation by the Ministry of Health (MOH) to acquire equipment used to tackle the COVID-19 outbreak.
A source from MACC said the case involved the process of appointing contractors for each purchase made under the emergency procurement procedures.
“The case is under investigation and we hope that the public will not speculate as it would disrupt the investigations.”
“The MACC also wants to deny the messages that have gone viral on social media, alleging that some officers were arrested yesterday in a raid on the ministry,” the source told Bernama today.
Yesterday, Bernama reported that Health Minister Datuk Seri, Dr. Adham Baba, said that the ministry would continue to cooperate with MACC to ensure that ministry staff always uphold the value of integrity.
Meanwhile, MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya confirmed that the news report claiming that several Health Ministry officials had been arrested in the raid was false.
“I want to deny everything about all those arrests,” he said.
A viral message circulating since yesterday claimed that MACC detained five people, including senior officials, secretary, contractor, and a political party leader, to assist in the investigation into the purchase of a special 30 million medical examination and testing system.
