KOTA KINABALU: Two policemen were arrested for trying to extort 5,000 ringgit from two people to escape arrest for having prohibited items in Sandakan.
Officers from the Sandakan branch of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) were reported to have detained the police officers, a sergeant and a corporal, aged 57 and 35, at 9:50 p.m. yesterday.
It was learned that the suspects had committed the act last Monday.
It is alleged that the police officers forced the individuals to hand over the money so that no action would be taken against them for possessing the prohibited items.
Sabah MACC Director S Karunanithy confirmed the arrest, saying the case is being investigated under Section 17 (a) of the 2009 MACC Act.
