Schalke defender Ozan Kabak has once again been linked to Liverpool, according to an Italian source.

The Italian angle has come about because 20-year-old Kabak is on AC Milan’s wanted list.

Milan wanted Kabak in the summer window and is reportedly still interested in the Turkey international.

Sports media set they report that Liverpool are interested in the center-back as they look to cover Virgil van Dijk.

Jurgen Klopp, who referred to Van Dijk as the best defender in the world in the run-up to Wednesday’s game with Ajax, will likely be without the Dutchman for the rest of the season.

Van Dijk has torn his anterior cruciate ligament and The athletic Journalist David Ornstein has suggested the damage could be even worse than feared.

He has said that the Dutchman’s recovery may be further away than originally claimed.

The Italian source has few details about Kabak other than that Klopp is “targeting” the player. The German club wants 30 million euros for Kabak and the source assures that the English champion is “one more rival” in the pursuit of the player.

Schalke open to sell

Just last month Chris Williams, Bundesliga journalist claimed that Schalke’s Kabak was first on Liverpool’s wanted list. And Van Dijk’s injury has accelerated his need for cover.

Williams claimed that Klopp was interested in Kabak because of his exciting potential and his impressive displays for the Bundesliga team. He is considered the right age to improve further, but be content enough with a team role at Anfield.

Publicly, Schalke are convinced that their team is not for sale. But privately, Williams claims that the Royal Blues would be willing to sell Kabak for the right price.

He tweeted: “Schalke sources confirm that Liverpool have contacted them about Ozan Kabak.

“Official line – the team is determined and not for interruptions now the season is underway. He said privately that an offer of around 25 million euros could force a rethink. “

Kazak joined Schalke in a € 15m move from Stuttgart last year. But its value has doubled with some secure displays.

He has a contract until 2024.
