If there is one thing that cannot be denied about this Liverpool team, it is that they never give up and often thrive when faced with adversity. It could be argued that Jürgen Klopp has never had to deal with a situation as difficult as he is now since he arrived at Anfield five years ago.
That may seem like a strange thing to say. After all, Liverpool are the reigning Premier League champions and have won four trophies in the last 18 months. Surely things can’t go all wrong, right?
Well, even the most optimistic people would find it hard to say that the current campaign has gone completely according to plan. On the surface at least, winning all three Champions League games and being just one point behind first in the League is a more than welcome position, but there are underlying issues that have made this season a struggle.
To begin with, the number of VAR decisions that have gone against Liverpool is difficult to understand. Yes, it can be reduced to bad luck, but you would like to think that things would change sooner rather than later.
Then there are the unprecedented circumstances surrounding the lack of fans in the stadiums. To be fair, this doesn’t just affect Liverpool, but there’s a distinct difference in atmosphere and intensity at Anfield that you would normally get with a packed stadium.
Also keep in mind that almost every Premier League team has grown stronger in some way. The top flight is arguably at its most competitive state than it has been since it was reformed in 1992. Winning the title this season would require some effort, for any team, not just Liverpool.
And then you go back to the most outstanding misfortunes that Liverpool have had to endure. The wounds. It’s amazing how many players have been forced to sit on the sidelines in the first few weeks of the season. Whether you are diagnosed with COVID-19 or suffer a season-ending injury, this season has been a tough one for players.

When all these circumstances are taken into account, it must be said that if Liverpool were to win the league again this year, they would go on to be one of the best teams in the club’s history, if not the best. Given that Anfield has already been home to some of the best names to grace the game, that would be an achievement.
This Liverpool team thrives by dealing with the toughest challenges and going against expectations. This season, they are the reigning champions, and that comes with a pressure that no Liverpool player has had to deal with for three decades.
Having a strong mindset is vital to achieving success in football, and under Klopp’s guidance, Liverpool have shown that they are more than capable of dealing with pressure. Certainly they will face many of them in the weeks and months to come.
Already reigning champions and having added a host of other trophies to the cabinet, winning the league this year would undoubtedly go on to be one of the greatest in the history of this special club. Forward the challenge!

Dan has written an excellent article on Álvaro Arbeloa. Before Trent Alexander-Arnold, I was the best right-back I had ever seen play for the club in my time on this planet. It is certainly worth reading.
There’s also a good article by Ollie on Liverpool’s need to sign a right-back in January, which I personally agree with, but it may not be the highest priority at the moment. Check it out.
