Liverpool has opened talks with Napoli about Kalidou Koulibaly, according to reports. The Reds want to associate him with Virgil van Dijk.

Tutto Mercato Web makes the claim. They say that discussions have started between the two clubs and that Napoli is open to the idea.

This is because both Kostas Manolas and Nikola Maksimovic seem like good replacements, in case Koulibaly leaves for a big fee. And it would certainly be a great fee.

Before it all closed, Napoli wanted at least £ 87m for the Senegalese defender. That price is now “obviously lower,” according to the report, and he imagines it to be the most difficult hurdle for both teams.

What RTK has to say

It’s very difficult to assign a value to any player right now, really, since we don’t even know when football will return. That has a big effect on finances, but also on what you’re investing in. Will any firm play until 2021?

But the appeal to Liverpool can beat that when it comes to Koulibaly. As TMW says, there is a possible partnership with Virgil van Dijk here, one that would surely be the best in the world.

Therefore it is very interesting for Liverpool to test the waters and see if they can secure that partnership at a significantly lower price than before.

You have to take all the transfer reports with a pinch of salt now, of course. Even if the clubs are discussing things, it’s hard to believe that they will end anything with so much up in the air.

Still, Koulibaly makes sense for Liverpool. He is a world-class defender and one who would make the Reds’ defense truly worth watching.
