Liverpool need a January transfer insurance policy but face a losing battle with Gini Wijnaldum: John Aldridge

It’s complicated, January. It is not the current market with things as they are. But Liverpool should perhaps look for another center half.

Hopefully Joel Matip can stay in shape. Fabinho has been absolutely magnificent back there, brilliant and like a new signing.

We have two guys who are learning the ropes well in Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams. They have done very well, but will the manager consider an insurance policy and get another central medium? I think possibly.

If there is someone out there who can help us in the long term, or even in the short term, I think it would be very wise to look for someone.

That is not disrespectful to young boys. We hope you have a great future. But it won’t be great if Jordan Henderson or Gini Wijnaldum end up having to go to the middle half if something happens to little kids.

I think, with the stakes at stake, it wouldn’t be a bad idea if the right player were out there. If they are not available at the correct price, then they cannot get one. If there is someone out there at the right price then absolutely, I think we should hire someone as an insurance policy to get through the season and get the Premier League title on the bag again.

The cavalry has returned

Alex Oxlade-Chambelain made his comeback against Crystal Palace and having seen Liverpool fight with more than enough injuries this season it was great to see him back.

It feels like everyone’s coming back at once and, with Liverpool building a lead at the top of the table, it’s the perfect time for Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool FC essential news

Once we get Diogo Jota back and Oxlade-Chamberlain also has more minutes on his legs, that will help the coach to no end.

In a week or two, you will have Thiago Alcantara, James Milner and Xherdan Shaqiri Shaqiri back.

Oxlade-Chamberlain will have played a bit and hopefully Jota is knocking on the door. There won’t be as many crowded games either.

For Jurgen it is as if the cavalry is returning and hopefully we can move on.

If Gini wants to go, she will go

You don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes with Gini Wijnaldum. Agents are difficult to deal with. Gini is now in an ideal position. His contract is running out, he’s going to be released.

He still loves Liverpool, I’m sure. But there will be reasons behind this. Only he knows. If Gini wants to go, she will. It’s as simple as that.

Everything is in Gini’s court. Will the club push the pot and give you what you want? I don’t know, we’ll have to keep an eye on this space and trust the manager.

But if you want to go, you probably will.
