Here are Liverpool’s morning headlines for Friday, September 25.

Klopp admits to Shaqiri’s substitute error

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has explained that Xherdan Shaqiri’s ankle fears led him to replace the Swiss midfielder during the Reds’ 7-2 Carabao Cup win over Lincoln City last night.

Shaqiri was replaced in the 75th minute after producing a stellar performance that featured an impressive free kick to put Liverpool 1-0 up.

And while Klopp admitted he was wrong to eliminate him, the German praised Shaqiri for excelling in a slightly deeper role at Sincil Bank.

“He [Shaqiri] he had a great game, “Klopp said.

“A super game in a fairly unknown position, but a little bit deeper in midfield. He did it very, very well.

“It was my fault [he was substituted] – I was afraid he might twist his ankle a bit but he was completely fine, it was absolutely nothing – he only touched it twice but I think it was good to take it off.

“But he played a very, very good game. The set pieces were outstanding, especially the free kick he scored, what a goal!

“There is no question about the quality of Shaqi, there never was.

“At the moment, everything looks great and looks very promising, so we’ll see.

Jones vindicates trade decision with stellar twist

Curtis Jones proved why Liverpool are refusing to send him on loan with an impressive two-goal performance in the win over Lincoln.

Beyond his two goals, Jones was a constant threat, propelling the Reds onto the floor with his pace and penetrating passing, as ECHO’s Conor Dunn explained.

With an eye-catching list of attributes to accompany his massive confidence, Jones appears to be on the cusp of a real challenge for a spot in Klopp’s first-choice XI.

At just 19 years old, Jones will hope to replicate his assertive performance when the Reds host Arsenal for a place in the quarterfinals next week.

Appleton reveals Klopp’s message

Lincoln boss Michael Appleton praised Reds boss Klopp after exchanging courtesies with the German on the touchline at the end of Thursday night’s clash.

Appleton admitted that his players were simply outmatched by a much-changed Liverpool, who displayed a ruthless streak in front of goal.

“Jurgen came over and said he’s played well and good luck for the rest of the season, which is a nice touch on his part,” Appleton said.

“He has done a great job there over the last few years. Today they had a good combination of experience and youth.

“I think we saw a masterclass in spiking from Liverpool in the first half. If we put a bucket in the top corner they would have hit it every time. There were some great endings. They punish you with these kinds of sides. “
