Alisson Becker will face a period on the sidelines that will last around six weeks, Jurgen Klopp confirmed over the weekend.
It was news that was only compounded by the loss to Aston Villa that followed shortly after the extent of the Brazilian’s injury was revealed.
If Alisson is out for the entirety of the planned six weeks, as is likely to be the case, he will miss the first three matches of the Champions League group stage.
Alisson will also take part in the visit to Manchester City in the Premier League, a potentially crucial clash in a campaign that probably won’t be as easy to navigate as the last one for Klopp’s side.
But in addition to the obvious cause for concern regarding the drop in quality when Alisson is missing, there is also another troubling impact that the 28-year-old’s lack brings.
On the Blood Red podcast, Ian Doyle explained: “Adrian made a mistake in the first goal against Aston Villa.
“But what he later exposed, I think, is that there are certain players who play much better when Alisson is there, and Joe Gomez is almost certainly one of them.
“Klopp said Liverpool did not react adequately to what happened with the first goal and that is correct, they could have fixed it.
“And Gómez did not play a good game, he came out on time, an act of mercy, while Joel Matip is injured and Fabinho does not solve it because he was almost as bad as Gómez in midfield.

“But everyone is going to have to move on. Liverpool won a lot of games last season with him in goal and you have to go back to that, even if it means stepping back two yards and not giving the ball to Adrian. His feet.
“They have found solutions to problems in the past and now they have to do it again.”
Finding solutions is the only way Klopp can go now, without a new goalkeeper signed on the deadline. But it is also the only way I was going to choose, with a quick fix in the transfer market that I have never used before.

Without Alisson, Gómez was the one who stood out the most against Aston Villa, but he was far from the only one. And Liverpool have just two weeks, with most players out of international service, to rediscover that balance.
