With the Ballon d’Or canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s most important individual award in soccer is likely to be FIFA’s The Best award, and Liverpool’s awkward appointment appears to be well represented among the nominees today.
Six reds will be contested in three categories, with four outfielders, a goalkeeper and a coach for the awards, which will be handed out on December 17 based on a vote by the media, a panel of experts and fans.
Along with coach Jürgen Klopp and goalkeeper Alisson Becker, in the outfield category are the three usual Liverpool suspects: Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, but now there is also midfielder Thiago Alcantara.
The graceful Spanish international hasn’t had much of a chance to make an impact at Anfield yet due to fitness issues, but he was key to Bayern Munich winning the treble last season and is more than worthy of inclusion as a nominee.
For the other three outfield nominees from Thiago and Liverpool, they will probably have to be happy just being nominated, with Bayern forward Robert Lewandowski the clear favorite. However, Klopp has reason to be the favorite in the manager category.
As for Alisson, after winning all of the top goalkeeper honors last year, injuries are likely to affect his chances this time around and it may well be another man involved in Bayern’s treble, Manuel Neur, who takes the award here. .
