It may just have been the Community Shield, but losing to Arsenal on Saturday will have hurt Jurgen Klopp and his Liverpool players.
Klopp and his team possess that all-important winning mentality after sealing multiple trophies in recent seasons, including the Champions League and Premier League, and they will be determined to add the 2020 Community Shield to their collection.
The reigning Premier League champions entered the game as favorites but were beaten on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s superb 12-minute shot broke the deadlock for the Gunners, but Takumi Minamino’s equalizer with just over 15 minutes to go set up the penalty shootout.
Arsenal made all five shots from the point, but Liverpool only made four. Rhian Brewster watched as his penalty hit the crossbar.
The 20-year-old looked dejected when Aubameyang scored the winning penalty, and this did not go unnoticed by teenager Curtis Jones.
Fans were delighted to see the 19-year-old, who was born and raised in Liverpool, comfort his teammate with a kiss on the cheek and a pat on the chest.
