Liverpool face the transfer decision on the defender while the German team makes its intentions clear

Liverpool will face a decision on whether to allow Nat Phillips to return on loan in Stuttgart next season.

Phillips has proven to be a success during his one-season stint with the German second-tier team, who were second in the race to ascend to the Bundesliga before the campaign was suspended last month due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

The 22-year-old struggled for playing time for the first few months with veteran Holger Badstuber and captain Marc-Oliver Kempf, the center’s favorite pairing.

Phillips, however, has started 11 of the past 12 games and has appeared in every minute since the turn of the year.

And a report in the German news outlet Stuttgarter Nachrichten has suggested that Stuttgart wants to borrow Phillips for another season.

Phillips, who signed a new contract with Liverpool before switching the loan to Germany, was temporarily withdrawn by Jurgen Klopp from his loan in January to help alleviate an injury crisis in the center of defense.

The defender made his debut in the FA Cup third round victory 1-0 over Everton and played the full 90 minutes before returning to Stuttgart for the remainder of the campaign.

Speaking to Goal last month, Phillips was open about his future plans.

“It’s not like he’s going to come back saying he should be playing Champions League football, that’s not realistic,” he said.

“But I feel that so far this year I have done enough to think ‘well, what’s the next step? “With the ultimate goal of one day playing for Liverpool.

“How long will it take, or what route will it take, I couldn’t tell you now.”
