Liverpool against Leipzig; Chelsea v Athletic

Liverpool will face RB Leipzig in the knockout stages of the Champions League after the draw for the first round of the knockout stages.

Liverpool they hope to regain the Champions League title they won in 2019. They will have to overcome an intriguing battle against Leipzig to have any chance of doing so.

Leipzig was the team that eliminated Manchester United from the competition in the group stage. Liverpool will hope to avoid a similar fate.

It will mark the return to his old club for Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita.

Chelsea face a difficult tie against Atlético de Madrid. He could see Diego Costa return to Stamford Bridge, although the forward has been linked to a departure from Atlético.

Atlético eliminated Liverpool from competition last season, so they will be looking to pose another threat to an English side’s hopes of progression.

Like Liverpool Manchester city, who seeks to progress better in the competition with Pep Guardiola, will face a German team. Borussia Mornchengladbach awaits them in the round of 16.

Gladbach finished as runners-up to Real Madrid in Group B.

Reigning champions Bayern Munich will face Lazio, who are competing in the round of 16 for the first time in 20 years.

Another highlight of the round will see Barcelona take on Paris Saint-Germain. That game will see Neymar face his former club for the first time since his world record transfer, with PSG seeking revenge after Barca’s comeback on them in 2017.

The first leg matches will be played on February 16, 17, 23 and 24, while the return matches will be played on March 9, 10, 16, 17.

The teams that finished as runners-up in their groups (all listed first above) will play the first leg matches at home.
