PETALING JAYA: Maxis Bhd’s telecommunications subsidiary Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd has reportedly been slapped with a RM 140 million tax bill by the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN).

According to the Malaysian Reserve, the company received additional evaluation notices for 2016 and 2017.

The company was quoted as saying that the additional assessment arose from the non-approval of Maxis Broadband’s deduction of interest expense incurred during the two-year assessment.

However, Maxis said it would question the basis and validity of the disputed further assessment notices and the sanction imposed.

The fine imposed on Maxis comes a month after Malaysia’s Multimedia and Communications Commission issued the company a compound of RM100,000 for registering prepaid SIM cards without verifying user information in 2019.

Maxis Broadband provides mobile phone and broadband services and is one of the six subsidiaries of Maxis Bhd.
