KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pix) Today he called on the leaders of Asia and the Pacific to work constructively to move the region forward on a path of solid, inclusive and sustainable economic growth and recovery.

He said the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), whose economies make up about 60 percent of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP), is playing a central role in spearheading the post-pandemic economic recovery.

“We need to trade and invest to get out of the current economic recession,” he said in his opening remarks at the first fully virtual APEC Economic Leaders Meeting (AELM).

While highlighting the importance of unity, Muhyiddin also urged leaders to avoid distractions and focus on seeking regional solutions to address the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Today, as we work together as a region to mitigate the impact of Covid-19, the relevance of APEC has become even more pronounced.

“We have to be united in the fight against Covid-19 and therefore it is of utmost importance that people around the world have access to vaccines and health technologies in an affordable, accessible and equitable way,” he said.

Muhyiddin, who is chairing this year’s meeting, sees APEC as an incubator and enabler that provides the right framework to implement economic ideas on a voluntary, non-binding and consensual basis.

He noted that member economies have often sought new and novel concepts within this platform, even when there was reluctance and hesitation to do the same in other multilateral fora. -Called
