Legendary Indian singer SP Balasubrahmanyam passes away

KUALA LUMPUR: Legendary Indian reproduction singer SP Balasubrahmanyam, 74, died today in Chennai, according to Indian media.

Citing his son, SP Charan, Indian media said the singer took his last breath at 1.04pm.

The singer tested positive for the new coronavirus in early August and was subsequently hospitalized.

His condition had worsened and on September 23 he was deemed critical.

SP Bala, who wowed his fans with his interpretation of songs from Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam to Hindi, has sung more than 40,000 songs.

His many notable hits include the award-winning track Sankarabharanam (Shiva’s Jewel), a 1980 Indian Telugu-language musical drama film written and directed by K Viswanath.

The film, in which SP Balasubrahmanyam was the replay singer of the main actor who played the role of an elderly carnatic singer, became a hit and was present for many days in Indian cinemas.

The singer, who has also acted in several films, will no doubt be remembered for his wit, sense of humor, and unforgettable voice.
