It’s only near the end of episode one of the new K-drama The King: Eternal Monarch that the characters played by Lee Min-ho and Kim Go-eun finally meet.
But this brief first encounter is what will ultimately hook audiences to the show, as it hints at the unfolding of the drama’s biggest mystery, as well as a fun-filled romance between the two individuals who are completely opposite.
Kim plays police detective Jung Tae-eul. One night he sees Lee’s character, Lee Gon, in the city center riding a white horse.
Since he is violating Seoul’s traffic laws, she stops him. However, he tells her that he is a king from another world.
Naturally, Tae-eul is not buying any of the nonsense that Lee Gon is throwing out. But, unknown to her, Lee Gon actually traveled from a parallel universe and has been searching for Tae-eul for the past 25 years!
While Lee Gon is happy to meet her in person, the practical Tae-eul is far from delighted to deal with the man who calls himself king.
This particular scene, as it happens, is Lee’s favorite from the series.
Lee returns to the entertainment scene after a three-year hiatus.He shares this during a video conference interview from Seoul, South Korea, and explains the importance of the moment.
“Tae-eul has occupied a large part of Lee Gon’s life. She is someone Lee Gon has long imagined and thought about,” says the 32-year-old actor, who returns to the entertainment scene after a parenthesis of three years, after joining the South Korean Army from May 2017 to April 2019.
Lee continues: “And even after they first meet, she continues to consume a large part of her thoughts. I would say that from the beginning to the end of the story, Tae-eul occupies about 70% of Lee Gon’s mind. “
Like any good K-drama, Eternal Monarch He knows how to play in the humorous and moving moments that result from the union of two very different people.
This series, however, offers a love story like no other in which these characters exist in two different universes, pushing the envelope on love that transcends space and time.
The two settings sometimes confused even Lee. He confesses: “When I read the script at the beginning, there were times when I didn’t know what parallel world events were taking place.”

In addition to playing the tough cop who works in the violent crime division, Kim also plays the character Luna that exists in the Lee Gon universe.
Unlike the confident and strong Tae-eul, Luna leads a sad life: This troubled person earns a living as a criminal and often runs away from the law.
The actress says: “Playing the dual roles, which is the first time for me, was a lot of fun because I was able to play two very different personalities in one show.
“In addition to the process of imagining how they would be different in terms of their external appearance, I examined the way they speak, the type of energy they emit, etc.
“Although it was fun, it put a certain level of burden on me during filming. But now, I’m very curious to see how everything worked. “
While both actors have worked with Eternal MonarchThe famous writer Kim Eun-suk before – he in The heirsand she in Elf – This is the first time that Lee and Kim have paired up.
Working with Lee, Kim says, “He has a good personality. When starting a new project, there is usually an awkward period, but I didn’t really feel (there was) an awkward period between us. I think we are fast approaching.
