KUALA LUMPUR: A local university professor and an unemployed man have been arrested by police for allegedly promoting drugs in the city in recent months.
Following yesterday’s arrests, the police seized 1.38 kg of cannabis, 3.3 g of ecstasy powder and 10 ecstasy pills worth more than 7,000 and 2,000 ringgit in cash.
Brickfields District Police Chief, ACP, Anuar Omar, said the lecturer was taken into custody following the arrest of an unemployed 19-year-old along the road in Kuchai Maju here at 2pm.
The 31-year-old professor from a Selangor university was arrested in the Jalan Pahang area around 10:30 p.m. the same day, following police questioning of the unemployed youth, Anuar said in a statement here today.
He said police seized a clear plastic package suspected of containing MDMA from the youths, who obtained the drugs from an obscure website.
Police believe the young man had been dealing with drugs for about seven months and his urine tested positive for cannabis.
Both suspects have been in pre-trial detention for seven days from today to be investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act of 1952, which carries the death penalty upon conviction.
“We are conducting further investigations to identify the union members as well as the source of the drug supply,” he added. -Called
