KUALA LUMPUR, January 12: The license for all police officers has been frozen with immediate effect following a spike in COVID-19 cases and the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) starting tomorrow, Police Inspector General Tan Sri Abdul said. Hamid Bador.

He said the directive was issued to ensure maximum police force in enforcing the MCO and to monitor compliance with the standard operating procedure (SOP) established by the Ministry of Health (MOH).

“Only those with emergency matters will have leeway to apply for the license and we are very sympathetic to the families of the police officers who died due to COVID-19 … it is hoped that by freezing their license, we can provide an alignment of personnel committed to ensure public compliance with SOPs.

“I listened to the briefing (on the increase in COVID-19 cases) from the Director General of Health (Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah) and as a result we can see that the decision to implement the MCO is appropriate.” said at a special press conference in Bukit Aman here.

Abdul Hamid said the situation would be worse if the MCO is not implemented and drastic action is not taken immediately, adding that the National Security Council (MKN) had made the right decision by implementing the MCO as of tomorrow.

When asked about roadblocks after the implementation of the MCO, Abdul Hamid said that district and state police chiefs and police commissioners were working on suitable sites to establish roadblocks in their respective states.

“I expect more than 300 barricades, with the possibility of doubling that number depending on the situation.

“These obstacles do not include the existing 56 stipulated in Ops Benteng,” he said.

Abdul Hamid said 48,000 police officers were expected to be on duty during the MCO, with 12,000 more on standby.

“People who work in essential services don’t need to worry about inter-state travel as they only need to show their employer’s letter at roadblocks and I think my men will use their discretion,” he said. – Bernama
