KOTA BHARU: It may have been easy for the authorities to ask teachers to teach classes online, but for many poor families it has become a nightmare.

Take, for example, Hasyani Mat Jusoh’s family and their five children. Since classes began last Sunday, the brothers have been sharing their smartphone to study through Teaching and Learning at Home (PdPR).

Hasyani, 42, said her family is among the poor who have a hard time adjusting to online learning, which takes place from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

She said that since they only have one smartphone at their disposal, the children, aged between six and 15, had to take turns completing their schoolwork.

“It is a difficult situation trying to find a way to support my children so as not to interrupt their online learning as my husband is a casual job worker with no fixed income.

“Sometimes my children cry in frustration after having to wait too long to connect to their virtual classroom,” Hasyani said when meeting at his home in Kampung Sri Kulim Melor today.

She said that the slow internet connection was also an inconvenience and she was forced to update her internet plan, which cost her an additional RM30 top-up every week.

According to Hasyani, since the motion control order (MCO) was enforced, his phone broke twice and had to be sent in for repair.

In addition to this challenge, Hasyani has to worry about his medical treatment, after he was diagnosed with stage two colon cancer two years ago.

As such, Hasyani, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment at Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital and physical therapy at Mahligai Health Clinic, is hopeful that someone will help his family.

“I would appreciate if my children could have two smartphones to deal with their PdPR sessions. This is enough to make it easier for them to learn online, ”he added.
