PETALING JAYA: Former education minister Maszlee Malik did not oppose an offer by the Perikatan Nasional government to make him the chairman of a new advisory panel for Mara Corp, the commercial arm of Bumiputera Mara’s power, leaked exchanges revealed on WhatsApp .
The screenshots and transcripts of the WhatsApp exchanges between Deputy Simpang Renggam and Rural Development Minister Abdul Latiff Ahmad were shared on Facebook by Malay political commentator Kamarul Zaman Yusoff, who described Maszlee’s act of rejecting posting as a “U-turn”.
In a group conversation with members of the newly created advisory committee for Mara Corp on April 27, Latiff introduced Maszlee as its chairman.

At this point, one of the members asked if there could be more details on the number of companies and companies assisted by Mara that have been affected by the Covid-19 crisis.

Maszlee did not respond to FMT when contacted. However, Latiff confirmed that the WhatsApp conversation with Maszlee did take place.
On May 8, Latiff released Maszlee’s appointment, saying his goal was to strengthen the corporation’s administrative structure and monitor its streamlining programs.
But Maszlee, who sided with Dr. Mahathir Mohamad after a split in PPBM, rejected the post the next day, saying his decision was in line with the mandate his voters gave him.
In separate conversations with Latiff, Maszlee explained the reasons for rejecting the post.
“I’m sorry Dato Seri, I have to reject the offer when I see that the corrupt are returning, it goes against our promise that the corrupt will not return. I can’t bear to see my name along with those whose corruption I cleaned up while I was at KPM (Ministry of Education), ”Maszlee said in a message sighted by FMT.
However, Latiff responded, asking Maszlee if he felt he was “clean” himself, adding that he should have filed reports if there was evidence of corruption in the education ministry.

He added that Muhyiddin Yassin had not offered publications to those facing corruption charges, and that the prime minister had been more lenient.

Maszlee resigned as minister of education in January, saying Mahathir told him to leave the post.
In the chat, Latiff also expressed regret that Maszlee had not informed him of his decision to reject the offer.
