PETALING JAYA: A lawyer raised the alarm after strangers used his name and e-mailed a total of seven electronic submissions with unknown content using the services of Pos Malaysia.

Marcus Chong, 30, said he received an email from Pos Malaysia stating that he had four electronic submissions on August 24.

He said he never made or paid for any of the shipments.

He said that when he called a Pos Malaysia operations center in Bangi for clarification, they told him that there were indeed such shipments and that they were in his name and email.

Chong’s case was highlighted by the MCA’s Department of Complaints and Public Services on Thursday (September 3).

“He filed a police report because he was not sure what was in the packages and why the senders would use his name and email,” said department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong.

“Then he went to the Pos Malaysia headquarters, but the receptionist refused to do anything because he said that he had already filed a police report.

“The complainant was subsequently referred to a supervisor who told him that the shipments were real and that one had already been delivered, while three were pending.”

However, the Pos Malaysia supervisor told Chong that they could not stop the shipments because once the items were shipped, they had to be delivered according to protocol.

Chong said that when he asked if any verification had been done on these packages, Pos Malaysia could not answer him.

Then on Wednesday (September 2), he received an email from Pos Malaysia stating that three more electronic submissions had been sent and delivered with his name and email.

“In total, seven shipments have been shipped and there may be more in the future,” Michael said.

Chong now lives in fear, as there may be illegal items on the plots that could cause him problems.

Meanwhile, Michael said the public should beware of these types of scams.

“I urge authorities like the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to come up with a course of action to protect the innocent.

“The public must be alert. If you are facing a similar problem, don’t take it lightly. Take action by filing a report because you could be a victim of a crime, ”she said.
