LANGKAWI: The domestic tourism sector on this duty-free island is finally coming to life, with more flights landing at the international airport.
The executive director of the Langkawi Development Authority, Ahmad Hezri Adnan, said that this meant more tourists were arriving, giving a huge boost to the island’s tour operators, severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“A total of 27 flights arrived at the airport yesterday, with 23 today.
“We were informed that hotel reservations on the island have been encouraging and if this is maintained we can reach the goal of 250,000 tourist arrivals this month,” he said.
He told reporters this after welcoming AirAsia’s maiden flight from Kota Bharu, Kelantan, which landed at 1:15 p.m.
It is known that since December 17, the airport had been handling more than 20 flight arrivals per day from Kuala Lumpur; Senai, Johor; Subang, Selangor; and Penang.
This trend is expected to continue until the end of this month.
Regarding the Kota Bharu-Langkawi route, Hezri said AirAsia was scheduled to operate three flights per week, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, starting today.
“Today’s flight, with 96 passengers on board, took one hour and five minutes to arrive from Kota Bharu.
“The Langkawi-Kota Bharu flight, with 108 passengers on board, departed at 1.40 pm,” he said, adding that AirAsia would operate its Ipoh-Langkawi route on Wednesdays.
